The wedding, the couple, the city, the people you love
As a New York City wedding photographer, my clients trust me to capture the small intricate moments to commemorate their special day: that tear in the father’s eye as he walks his daughter down the aisle, the frantically awaited groomsman, the flower girl tripping over herself and the colorful petals flying about.
From a young age, people begin to wonder what their wedding day might look like. A little girl wonders what her dress might look like, and a little boy wonders what his vows might be. Everyone wonders what their bride or groom will look like. Will they be handsome? Will they be kind and gentle and get along well with their parents?
When two people fall in love, the couple inevitably starts to talk about what that special day might look like. As their love grows, the vows that they might write begin to form in their heads whether they know it or not at the time, in anticipation of the day that they perhaps will be expressed in a sacred ceremony. They talk about their special day over dinner, possibly while lying in bed, or casually over the phone. It is almost as important as the first time that a couple says, “I love you” to one another. The first time the couple expresses a desire to commit to each other through a wedding ceremony communicates love and a desire to spend the rest of the time with one another. These moments build up over days, weeks, months, sometimes years, or even decades and come together with full momentum on the day that they commit to each other on their wedding day.
Allow your wedding day to be exactly what it is.
It can seem like quite a daunting task to take all of the conversations, all these moments, and capture the motion of the day that they all come together. As a New York wedding photographer, I hold extraordinary power in my hands. I am the one who attempts to record the magic of that day when all of the anticipation and build-up come together in one beautiful ceremony. The old saying “blink, and you’ll miss it” is especially true for a big day like your wedding day. As a photojournalistic -candid wedding photographer, my job is to immortalize those moments so that they can be cherished forever.
For NYC wedding photographers, the stakes are even higher, as this special day is taking place in the kind of place that holds worlds of perspectives. In a city of endless points of view, I have to capture the bride and groom’s point of view. It is not enough to follow a simple template. Each job, and each photograph, presents a new challenge because each wedding is as unique as the two people getting married. Every picture is fresh and new since this is the first time this event has ever happened in history. This pair of unique individuals committing to one another has never happened before this way and will never happen again this way. It is my job to convey the unique nature of this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Wedding photography could be sexy, edgy, funny, and honest.
Of course, I have to master the principles of photography. Today, as an NYC wedding photographer, it is imperative to understand fashion, portraits, and photojournalistic photography to artistically and emotionally transcend those moments in time through the camera lens. There is so much beauty at the moment that it is essential to understand its roots to convey it to others fully. My job is also unique because of where it takes place. NYC wedding photography is unique because it attempts to create a still, informative picture in an area that never stands still. There is vibrancy and energy in the air that can be felt by everyone the moment they step into New York City. My job is to convey the sanctity of a wedding day and show the motion of a lively city in a still representation, a snapshot of a cacophony of life and movement. It is a challenging task to be a photographer capturing honest as they happen as it is, but add to that the fact that it is a wedding that I am capturing, one of the most important days of people’s lives, and the fact that it is happening against the background of the enthusiasm of Manhattan, and there are quite a few challenges!
NYC Wedding Photographer who captures a unique love story
The first approach I take is to view the moments I capture for what it is: seeing the best of humanity. The emotions, the love, the support from friends and family, all of these immaterial, fantastical facets of human life are presented to me, and it is my job to relay what is given to me back to the people who were involved, in a way that appropriately captures those concepts.
In many ways, it would be easier to document the beauty of a sunset or a night sky, since it is merely visually breathtaking. It is clear when gazing at these photographs what is astounding about the moment. However, weddings are, above anything else, emotionally beautiful. They represent aspects of us that exist below the surface, such as love, affection, commitment, and trust. So, the question is, how do I make it clear the beauty that I am experiencing in a visual form when the vision I am seeing is more profound than that? How do I convey through one of the senses what is experienced beyond the physical body? I take it upon myself to find the answer to this question for every wedding. I have found that the key to answering these questions is to see the wedding from the couple’s point of view to revere the moments that I am capturing fully. I must see what they see, and feel what they feel to display it back in an immortalized image.
A wedding is beautiful not only in the physical sense but emotionally and spiritually as well. To photograph a wedding is to attempt to show the beauty that physically exists past the physical realm through sight. This is part of the reason that I often incorporate black-and-white forms. What I want to stand out is beyond the physical and eliminating aspects that may distract the viewer from the true essence of the content allows for more transparency about the content.
My job is to create high-quality content that grabs the attention of somebody casually passing by. Lighting and composition are essential tools I use to draw people in. As someone with experience and a handle on the craft, I understand how to delicately handle these elements to paint a full picture of the moment I am capturing. These tools are at my disposal to show the unique and beautiful nature of the particular moment so that it is clear and seems to call out to any person who may gaze upon the work.
NYC Wedding photographers are given free rein for maximum creativity with their clients. There is a great level of trust instilled in wedding photographers because the couple is trusting that while they are having the most beautiful day of their lives, there is someone there who can fully capture the essence of that moment.
I truly owe it to my clients and me to capture the poignant, timeless images an average photographer would miss. My passion for this craft comes from the challenge of trying to capture the essence of the moments as they unfold in front of me. I get to see people at their very best and most beautiful New York, a city with life and its existence. The couple trusts me to be able to capture it in a way that does the moment justice, and therefore I bring a passion for communicating the unique beauty of the wedding that I am fortunate to capture.
As a Candid NYC wedding photographer, I can only hope that I do the craft, the moment, the couple, the city, and the loving justice. I constantly aim to ensure that I put myself in the perspective of those having their single day so that I better understand their humanity, emotions, and souls. Through my work, I capture this awe-inspiring climax of beauty in one day, so that it is forever remembered and treasured by the people who experienced it.
